On Monday, Sept. 21, The Labor Forum, 4-5pm on WRFG 89.3FM spoke with Atlanta activists about two issues of importance to working people and their families -- the killing of unarmed men, women and children, particularly people of color, by police and the forced displacement and destruction of working class neighborhoods by gentrification and upscale development.
At 4:15pm, our guest is Xavier Best with SCLC Youth and member of the DeKalb County Coalition for Justice and Police Accountability The deaths of Kevin Davis, Anthony Hill and Troy Robinson at the hands of DeKalb police has produced citizen demands for real change in policing procedures and tactics. Xavier Best talks about the groups that are involved and the actions being taken by the Coalition.
From 4:30-5pm, The Labor Forum audience hears from the residents of Peoplestown, a historic neighborhood of the city's Black working class, who are facing forced removal from their homes and their demolition under the guise of flood control. Tim Franzen(Occupy Our Homes Atlanta) , and Sherise Brown and Allison Johnson (Peoplestown residents) are in the studio. Tanya Washington, an affected homeowner is among the activists fighting this power move by the city, joins the conversation by phone. Ms. Mattie Jackson, the 93 year old Summerhill/Peoplestown community leader, is also among the neighbors fighting and whose home is scheduled to be torn down.
